CLEANING UP THE BUILDINGS
The Iron Duke Derelict and abandoned buildings are an eyesore that, along with litter, can blight an area. TDC is now preparing to use a little used regulation to persuade owners to look after buildings they own. Many of the first batch to be tackled are in Eastcliff including the Iron Duke, in the picture, and some at the top of the High Street. We can all help by identifying the worst examples and encouraging owners to co-operate. Your District Councillors support the campaign to restore the lantern on the Iron Duke.

A grade two listed pub in Ramsgate has been officially re-opened recently, after receiving help from Thanet Council. The owners of the "Deal Cutter" in King Street were awarded a grant by Thanet Council from the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, which is made up of money from the Single Regeneration Budget and English Heritage. The grant was used towards a new roof and railings at the rear of the property. Extensive renovations have also been carried out inside the building. The "Deal Cutter" is thought to be the oldest pub in Ramsgate and appeared on maps in 1822, although parts of the building are believed to date from the early eighteenth century. It ceased trading as a pub in 1997 and was a café bar for a short period, before falling derelict. Keith Clark, the owner and licensee of the "Deal Cutter" pub, said: "We have spent the last two years refurbishing this building from top to bottom with help from the grants made available by Thanet Council. It has gone from being one of the worst eyesores in Ramsgate to one of the jewels in King Street's crown. Everyone has commented on the excellent renovation work that we have carried out. Although the pub is still old fashioned, it now has all the modern luxuries as well".
